CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“Get your warm gear on. We’re going out for the day.”

Sully tossed Lib’s coat at her, then crouched to zip up Poppy’s. He flicked the end of her nose, making her laugh. A heat, a kind of satisfying warmth, set up home in his chest. This, right here, was all he’d ever wanted. A family, a chance to be a full-time father to his daughter, and the woman he loved beside him, laughing as she got her arm stuck while putting on her coat.

But he and Lib had a long way to go before they could put the past behind them and move forward. In a way, her loss of memories gave them a chance to start from scratch, to put aside the terrible event that had torn them apart and begin their lives afresh.

He’d never forget the misery of the last four years, and he knew Lib was struggling with his revelation. At night he heard her in the bedroom next to his, tossing and turning, and then she’d get up and pace her room, occasionally trudging downstairs for a glass of warm milk. He’d rather have waited a few more days at least before telling her what she’d done, but he couldn’t take it back. No use bemoaning or wishing it hadn’t happened. All they could do was deal with the fallout and try to keep busy.

“Ready?”

“Yes, we are, right, Poppy?”

Lib held out her hand, and Poppy took it. Lib might not remember her daughter, but her motherly instincts were in full flow. Poppy hadn’t a clue that Lib had lost her memories, and when she’d make a mistake on the odd occasion, such as putting peas on Poppy’s plate—which she hated and refused to eat—they laughed it off as something and nothing, and Poppy remained none the wiser. They both agreed it was for the best. If it grew into a bigger problem, they’d find a way to tell her in words she could understand and that wouldn’t frighten her.

He strapped Poppy into her car seat and climbed behind the wheel, but as Lib went to get in the passenger side, she paused, her entire body stiffening. He followed her sight line.

Napier. What the fuck was he doing here?

Sully unfastened his belt. “Won’t be a sec, Popsicle.”

He left Poppy holding a full and frank discussion with her doll and went to join Lib. He slipped an arm around her waist. She wriggled, then moved out of his reach.

Okay, then. Message received. Loud and goddamn clear.

His stomach hardened, a sickly feeling taking root. Jealousy was an ugly word with a vicious sting in the tail, which came in handy for occasions such as this. His protective instincts swung into play, despite the rejection leaving a sour taste in his mouth. He moved again, bringing his body flush with hers, their arms touching through their heavy coats. This time, she remained where she was and even peeked up at him as if assessing his mood. He kept his gaze on Napier.
